Key Takeaways on Professional Tax Telangana 2026

  • The levy comes from the Telangana Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1987, run by the Commercial Taxes Department. The rates sit in the First Schedule to the Act.
  • Salary slabs (Entry 1): up to Rs 15,000 a month, Nil; Rs 15,001 to Rs 20,000, Rs 150 a month; above Rs 20,000, Rs 200 a month. A salaried person pays at most Rs 2,400 a year.
  • Professionals, companies, partners, traders and other listed classes pay a fixed annual amount of Rs 1,250 or Rs 2,500 (or nil below a turnover or experience floor), never more than the Rs 2,500 constitutional cap.
  • Employers hold a certificate of registration (PTRC); everyone else liable in their own right holds a certificate of enrolment (PTEC). Both must be applied for within 30 days of becoming liable.
  • Late payment carries interest of 2% a month or part of a month. A late monthly return carries a penalty of Rs 5 to Rs 100 for each day of delay.

Most explainers on Telangana professional tax stop at the three salary slabs. That is only Entry 1 of a schedule with 40 entries. The same Act also fixes what a doctor, a private limited company, a partner in a firm, a kirana store or a hotel owner pays each year, and who is fully exempt.

This guide is the rate and due-date reference for the Telangana levy. It walks through the First Schedule, explains what the employer must do every month, and sets out the interest and penalty sections in plain words. If you only need the step-by-step application on the portal, our employer guide to professional tax registration in Telangana covers that in detail.

Professional tax is a State levy and runs separately from TDS on salary under Section 192. Your payroll has to track the two independently.

What is Professional Tax?

Professional tax is a tax a State charges on anyone who earns from a profession, trade, calling or employment inside that State. In Telangana it was first enacted as the Andhra Pradesh Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1987 (in force from 15 June 1987) and continues as the Telangana Act of the same name.

Constitutional Cap

Article 276(2) of the Constitution limits the total professional tax payable by one person to one State to Rs 2,500 a year. That is why no entry in the Telangana schedule goes above Rs 2,500 a year, and why the top salary slab works out to Rs 2,400 (Rs 200 x 12).

Who Needs Professional Tax Registration in Telangana?

Section 6 of the Act sets up two separate certificates, and which one you need depends on whose tax you are paying.

Who you areCertificateWhose tax it covers
Employer paying salary or wages in TelanganaRegistration (PTRC), Form ITax deducted from employees
Self-employed professional (doctor, lawyer, CA, architect, consultant)Enrolment (PTEC), Form IIOwn annual tax
Company, firm or trader covered by a schedule entryEnrolment (PTEC)The entity's own annual tax
Director or partner drawing remunerationEnrolment (PTEC)Own annual tax

The test for an employer is simple: the moment one person on your payroll works in Telangana and earns above Rs 15,000 a month, Section 5 puts the deduction duty on you. A business that both employs staff and falls under its own schedule entry ends up with two certificates, one for each liability.

The trigger is the place of work. A Bengaluru or Delhi company that has staff sitting in a Hyderabad office deducts Telangana professional tax for those staff, even with no registered office in the State. Groups with staff in several States can use our multi-state professional tax compliance guide.

Telangana Professional Tax Slab Rates 2026

Salary and Wage Earners (Entry 1)

Monthly Salary or WagesTax per MonthTax per Year
Up to Rs 15,000NilNil
Rs 15,001 to Rs 20,000Rs 150Rs 1,800
Above Rs 20,000Rs 200Rs 2,400

Two points that trip up payroll teams:

  • The slab is fixed by the salary paid for that month. An employee whose pay crosses Rs 20,000 in a month because of arrears or a bonus moves into the Rs 200 band for that month. Form V requires the employer to certify that deductions were revised wherever an employee's salary changed.
  • Above Rs 20,000 the amount is flat. A Rs 25,000 earner and a Rs 2,50,000 earner both pay Rs 200.

5Directors drawing remuneration from a company (other than government nominees)Rs 2,500
8Registered dealers and shopkeepers under the Shops and Establishments ActNil below Rs 10 lakh turnover; Rs 1,250 for Rs 10 to 50 lakh; Rs 2,500 above Rs 50 lakh

21Each partner of a firm drawing remunerationRs 1,250
35Call centres and BPO/KPO centresRs 2,500
40Anyone else in a profession, trade, calling or employment with annual income above Rs 1,80,000Rs 2,500

The full schedule also lists nursing homes, diagnostic labs, beauty parlours, educational institutions, property developers, transport operators, chit funds and others, each at Rs 1,250 or Rs 2,500 a year. Check your exact entry in the First Schedule on tgct.gov.in before you pay.

Income Tax Treatment

An employee can deduct professional tax actually paid from salary income under Section 16(iii) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 for FY 2025-26, and under Section 19 (Table, S. No. 1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from tax year 2026-27. The deduction is lost if the employee stays in the default new regime. A self-employed person or business claims the tax as a business expense.

PTRC vs PTEC in Practice

The Act itself only speaks of a "certificate of registration" and a "certificate of enrolment"; PTRC and PTEC are the short forms used on the portal. What separates them in day-to-day compliance:

PointPTRC (registration)PTEC (enrolment)
Section6(1)6(2)
HolderEmployerProfessional, business, director, partner
Tax paidDeducted from employees every monthOwn fixed amount, once a year
ReturnMonthly, Form VNo monthly return; enrolment certificate states the amount and due date
Annual due dateNot applicableBefore 30 June (or within one month if enrolled after 31 May) under Section 10

There is one exception to the employer's duty. Under the proviso to Section 5, an employee who works for more than one employer, or who also falls under a higher-rate entry (for example, a salaried doctor with a private practice), can give the employer a certificate in the prescribed form and enrol and pay personally. The employer then stops deducting for that person.

Telangana Professional Tax Registration Process

Applications are made online through the Profession Tax services on the Commercial Taxes portal, tgct.gov.in. In outline:

  1. Create a user login on the portal and choose new PT registration.
  2. Enter entity, bank and place-of-business details. A business already registered under another State tax law can pull in its existing details.
  3. Upload address proof of the principal place of business, the entity PAN, a recent bank statement, the constitution document (partnership deed, or MoA, AoA and incorporation certificate) and PAN of partners or directors.
  4. After approval, a PTIN is issued and the certificate (enrolment only, or registration and enrolment) is downloaded from the portal.

Section 6 gives you 30 days from the date you become liable, for example the date you first pay a salary above Rs 15,000 in Telangana. For screenshots, the document checklist by entity type and common rejection reasons, see our guide to Telangana professional tax applicability and registration.

If you move your place of work to another area, Rule 26 requires notice to both the old and the new assessing authority within 15 days.

Employer Duties Each Month

For an employer, professional tax is a monthly payroll routine:

  1. Deduct the slab amount from each employee's salary before paying it (Section 5).
  2. Deposit the total through the portal challan.
  3. File Form V, the monthly return showing employees by salary band and the tax deducted. Under Section 7, a return without proof of payment is treated as not filed.

Section 5 makes the employer liable for the tax "irrespective of whether such deduction has been made or not." If you forget to deduct, the tax and interest still come out of your pocket.

ObligationFrequencyDue Date
Deduct PTMonthlyWhen salary is paid
Pay PT and file Form VMonthly10th of the following month (confirm on tgct.gov.in)
Enrolled person's own taxYearlyBefore 30 June

Tax Garden's payroll compliance service handles the PTRC application, the monthly Form V and challan, slab changes when salaries move, and the reconciliation of PT deducted against PT deposited, alongside PF, ESI and TDS on salary.

Penalties and Interest for Non-Compliance

Every amount below is from the Act and the Professional Tax Rules on tgct.gov.in.

DefaultSectionConsequence
Wilful failure to apply for registration (employer)6Penalty of Rs 10 to Rs 20 for each day of delay
Wilful failure to apply for enrolment (others)6Penalty up to Rs 5 for each day of delay
False information in the application6Penalty of Rs 100 to Rs 1,000
Monthly return filed late without reasonable cause7Penalty of Rs 5 to Rs 100 for each day of delay
Tax not deducted, or deducted but not paid11, Rule 24Interest at 2% a month or part of a month, plus the employer is an assessee in default
Tax not paid within the time in a notice of demand12Penalty of 25% to 50% of the tax due, on top of interest

Interest is charged for each month or part of a month, so paying a day after the due date costs a full month's 2%.

Exemptions from Professional Tax in Telangana

Entry 39 of the First Schedule fully exempts:

  • Agriculturists
  • Persons performing religious duties
  • Listed skilled workers: goldsmiths, blacksmiths, pot makers, basket makers, washermen, barbers, cobblers, tailors, carpenters, masons, plumbers, book binders, toddy tappers and electricians
  • Persons with a disability of 40% or more of any kind
  • Dry cleaners

Beyond Entry 39, the nil bands do their own exempting: salaries up to Rs 15,000 a month, professionals in their first five years, and traders, contractors and hotels below Rs 10 lakh turnover pay nothing. Section 31 also lets the Government exempt or reduce tax for any class by notification, so check the GOs and notifications page on tgct.gov.in for any class-specific relief before treating someone as exempt.

Telangana vs Karnataka vs Maharashtra: PT Comparison

Each State writes its own slabs. For the full rules, see Professional Tax Karnataka, Professional Tax Maharashtra and our State-wise professional tax rates table.

AspectTelanganaKarnatakaMaharashtra
Nil slab (monthly salary)Up to Rs 15,000Up to Rs 25,000Up to Rs 7,500 (men); up to Rs 25,000 (women)
Bands above nilRs 150, then Rs 200Rs 200Rs 175, then Rs 200
Highest monthly deductionRs 200Rs 200 (Rs 300 in February)Rs 300 (February)
Highest annual tax on salaryRs 2,400Rs 2,500Rs 2,500
Gender-based slabsNoNoYes

Telangana is the only one of the three where a salaried employee in the top band pays less than the Rs 2,500 cap, because it has no February top-up.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Deducting from the wrong salary figure

The slab follows the monthly salary or wages actually paid. Using the CTC divided by 12 instead of the month's payout puts staff whose pay varies into the wrong band.

2. Treating PT as only an employer issue

Directors drawing remuneration, partners, and professionals past five years' standing owe their own annual tax under separate entries, due before 30 June. A PTRC does not cover them.

3. Assuming an unpaid deduction is the employee's problem

Section 5 makes the employer liable whether or not the tax was deducted. Interest of 2% a month runs against the employer.

4. Paying without filing, or filing without paying

Form V and the challan go together. A return without proof of payment is not a valid return, and the daily late-return penalty keeps running.

5. Claiming the PT deduction in the new regime

The Section 16(iii) / Section 19 deduction for professional tax is available only to employees who opt for the old regime.

Where Tax Garden Helps

Tax Garden's payroll team works out which schedule entries apply to your business and its directors or partners, files the PTRC and PTEC applications, and runs the monthly Form V and challan, so the 2% interest and daily penalties never start. Professional Tax Telangana 2026: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Professional Tax slab in Telangana for 2026?

Under Entry 1 of the First Schedule, monthly salary or wages up to Rs 15,000 attract nil tax, Rs 15,001 to Rs 20,000 attract Rs 150 a month, and above Rs 20,000 attract Rs 200 a month. A salaried employee therefore pays at most Rs 2,400 a year. Professionals, companies and other listed classes pay fixed annual amounts of Rs 1,250 or Rs 2,500 under other entries.

What is the difference between PTRC and PTEC in Telangana?

A PTRC is the certificate of registration under Section 6(1), held by an employer who deducts tax from salaries and files the monthly Form V return. A PTEC is the certificate of enrolment under Section 6(2), held by professionals, businesses, directors and partners who pay their own fixed annual tax. A business that employs staff and also falls under its own schedule entry needs both.

What is the due date for Professional Tax payment in Telangana?

Employers pay the tax deducted and file Form V monthly, by the 10th of the following month as shown on the Commercial Taxes portal (confirm on tgct.gov.in). Enrolled persons pay their annual tax before 30 June, or within one month of enrolment if enrolled after 31 May, under Section 10.

What is the penalty for late Professional Tax filing in Telangana?

Unpaid tax carries interest at 2% a month or part of a month under Section 11 and Rule 24. A late monthly return attracts a penalty of Rs 5 to Rs 100 per day under Section 7. Failing to apply for registration costs an employer Rs 10 to Rs 20 per day, and tax not paid after a notice of demand can attract a further penalty of 25% to 50% of the tax.

Who is exempt from Professional Tax in Telangana?

Entry 39 of the First Schedule exempts agriculturists, persons performing religious duties, listed skilled workers such as tailors, carpenters, masons, plumbers and electricians, persons with 40% or more disability, and dry cleaners. Salaries up to Rs 15,000 a month and professionals in their first five years also pay nil.

How do I register for Professional Tax in Telangana?

Apply online through Profession Tax services on tgct.gov.in within 30 days of becoming liable. Enter entity, bank and place-of-business details, upload the entity PAN, address proof, a bank statement and the constitution documents, and submit. After approval a PTIN is issued and the certificate can be downloaded.

How does Telangana PT compare with Karnataka and Maharashtra?

Telangana exempts salaries up to Rs 15,000 and charges Rs 150 or Rs 200 a month above that, so the top annual amount is Rs 2,400. Karnataka exempts up to Rs 25,000 and Maharashtra uses separate slabs for men and women; both reach Rs 2,500 a year through a higher February deduction.

Is Professional Tax deductible from income tax?

Only under the old tax regime. A salaried employee who opts for the old regime deducts professional tax actually paid under Section 16(iii) of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (Section 19 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 from tax year 2026-27). Self-employed persons claim it as a business expense.
